How do people get on reality shows and game shows?

I’ve always wondered how people get on these reality shows and game shows. Is there a website you complete an application on. Has anyone ever been on one and can share their experience or the process?
Open auditions are held throughout the world through casting calls. Though many are located in LA or NY, some shows do travel. I once auditioned for The Real World at a Phoenix, AZ audition and all I had to do was show up, fill out a form, then go through an interview process with a group of people. Each show differs depending on what kind of cast they are looking for.
